Popular Opinion Leader

Popular Opinion Leader

Popular Opinion Leader (POL) is a Community Level Intervention program in South Los Angeles for Latino gay men. This program works by having trained leaders talk with friends, acquaintances, and in many cases new people met throughout program activities. These conversations are typical conversations that are essentially used to influence positive behaviors with regards to sex, HIV and STD’s. To become a Popular Opinion Leader is simple. Members have to attend a training that consists of 3 classes spread out over the course of 3 weeks, that’s it! Once they become an official Popular Opinion Leader, they begin to work by reaching out to the community and share the knowledge that was gained - either as a group with other Popular Opinion Leaders or as an individual. There is also a support group every Friday to keep in touch and talk about anything and everything.  Every three months we have a social event in our South LA center for the community, but especially for Popular Opinion Leaders as appreciation for all their efforts.
